Abstract
Objectives: There have been many researches on the risk factors and treatments of osteoporosis, but the argument with the parity and bone mineral density still exists. And also there are few researches about the effect of alendronate on parity. Consequently, the aim of this study was to review the effect of parity on bone mineral density and to show the change of bone mineral density after treatment with alendronate for 2 years.

Methods: We evaluated 541 women aged between 50 and 65 who visited a climacteric clinic of a general hospital in Seoul from March 2003 to December 2005. All their follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels were above 40 IU/L. They were divided into six groups according to parity and we measured anthropometric characters and bone mineral density (BMD) of lumbar and femur. After 2-year treatment with alendronate, we measured the BMD of Lumbar and femur again.
Results: BMD of lumbar was gradually decreased by the parity and that of femur was decreased in the groups having over 3 parity. And after 2-year treatment with alendronate, the increasing rate of lumbar BMD was proportionate to parity when parity was over 2, but femur BMD had no significant deference between groups.

Conclusion: The BMD of Korean postmenopausal women was inversely proportionate to parity. And the treatment with alendronate was more effective in the group having more parity.
